Colonel Kenneth Charles Stuart Erskine 1888-1964.


KCS Erskine was born in Maligaon India on 22nd October 1888 the son of Claude Francis and MaryKatherine. His father was a Deputy Superintendent of the Revenue and Survey Department. In 1907 on a Indian Cadet Scholarship entered Sandhurst and was gazetted to the Indian Army (ISC) in 1908 later joining the 5th Gurkha Rifles. According to his confidential reports of 1909-12 he was very well thought of and was well regarded in the 1st Battalion. Indeed in late 1914 became Adjutant. His moment of glory came in Gallipoli in June/July 1915 when the battalion on its attack on J15 trench lines lost all their officers save one and Lieutenant Erskine being the senior British officer left commanded the battalion until wounded. For his conduct he was awarded  an MC.
