KCS Erskine was born in Maligaon India on 22nd October 1888 the son of Claude Francis and MaryKatherine. His father was a Deputy Superintendent of the Revenue and Survey Department. In 1907 on a Indian Cadet Scholarship entered Sandhurst and was gazetted to the Indian Army (ISC) in 1908 later joining the 5th Gurkha Rifles. According to his confidential reports of 1909-12 he was very well thought of and was well regarded in the 1st Battalion. Indeed in late 1914 became Adjutant. His moment of glory came in Gallipoli in June/July 1915 when the battalion on its attack on J15 trench lines lost all their officers save one and Lieutenant Erskine being the senior British officer left commanded the battalion until wounded. 1827 Pattern Officer's Rifles Sword by Wilkinson, Pall Mall, London. Proven 5th September 1908 for Kenneth Erskine.

This is a 1827 Rifles Pattern Officers' sword with 1892 blade was made for Kenneth Charles Stuart Erskine, 5th Gurkha Rifles and was proven on 5th September 1908 by Wilkinson and Co, Pall Mall, London. It is a special pattern sword made with a patent solid hilt which was a much more stronger hilt than the ordinary made sword made by Wilkinson's and other makers of this time. Another special feature to note is the wreath on the oval surround which was a distinction of the Rifle Brigade who were an allied Regiment of the 5th Gurkhas Rifles.
